No hate!

It's almost Chinese New Year, and to us, it's always meant more than 1st of Jan, which we usually spend sleeping. This year, my 1st Jan rolled by with iSketch and google hangout (haha, virtual party with friends), but Chinese New Year won't be the same without some cooking, cleaning, and family feast. This year shall not differ!

Before typing this entry up, I was actually looking through the articles and youtube videos regarding the "war" going on between Hong Kong and mainland China. Apparently, a mainland Chinese family/friends and kids were eating on the mtr in Hong Kong and was making quite a mess. A Hong Kong man told them not to eat on the train, but instead of admitting fault, they laughed at the man for his bad Mandarin and disregarded him. Things quickly escalated into a full scale argument, with others who were watching joining in and the pressing of the emergency button to call for staff. Someone taped it down and uploaded it on youtube.

Then a professor in mainland China decided to make his own hate response, calling Hong Kong people dogs and all sorts of insults. Meanwhile, Hong Kong people are hurling back about how uncivilized mainland China people are, ruining Hong Kong with their vulgar ways.

The professor's response got taken off youtube for inflaming racial hate, but it's been uploaded again. Just thought it was interesting how something that gets put up with constantly here in Australia can be a potential racial war in Hong Kong. I get annoyed by people eating on trains, cutting their nails (argh, I'd move), eating especially in enclosed air-con'd trains, listening to music with noise spilling out of their headphones, and coughing constantly without covering, amongst many others, but then hey, I guess I should start driving if I don't want to put up with those stuff. Now I just grab my trusty headphones and immerse myself into George RR Martin's fantasy land on my kindle :D

Rant aside, here:

Have some coffee love! I guess Pennant Hills Corner Cafe has redeemed itself in my eyes. The new-ish owner must have fired the bad barista and instead gone for a training course herself. She made this coffee for me and it wasn't bad.

Reminder to find myself a pineapple tart mould (I just had trouble remembering how to spell "mould" and almost typed "mold"...)

Was really lazy and I made this after work, so lots of shortcut used for this recipe. Still turned out alright!

3 cans of crushed pineapples, drained. Added cinnamon, sugar, star annise and cloves into the pineapple. Nuked it in the microwave for... um... I forgot how long, maybe half an hour, but lots of stirring in between. I should have processed the pineapple so it won't have the occasional chunks still, but I couldn't find my processor.

Roll into balls.

Then I found out my weighing scale died. It died completely. Looks like I need to go buy another one, but I can't believe it died. How was I supposed to weigh out my flour and sugar for the pastry?? I just estimated it all in the end. Turned out fine, haha. Added about 250g flour, 125g butter, 2 eggs (supposed to just use egg yolk, but what am I supposed to do with the whites then??), cold water and sugar... according to taste I guess.

This isn't turning out to be much of a recipe entry, but it's ok, I'm sure the people reading this have their own special way of making pineapple tarts.. not this... lazy method... haha.

Since I don't have a mould that makes open pineapple tarts, I just rolled out the pastry and made it like a sausage roll.

Yay, effortless pineapple tarts. It feels like Chinese new year now =)

Did not attempt making love letters. No mould. No coal. No time. Lazy.

And tonight's feast? We decided to have it tonight because family are likely going to be busy or tired tomorrow night.

Parents went to fish market in the morning and got a lobster :D and this salad thing..

My dad makes the best prawns! It's basically been opened up into a butterfly, then sprinkled with finely chopped garlic and shallots, seasoned with soy sauce and bit of oil, steamed for 4 minutes and it's done!

Mushroom tofu soup~

We had steamed fish too, but I forgot to take photo =( or maybe my hands were dirty from the lobster... hm..

Happy Chinese New Year!!! Keep safe, happy and healthy!

Thanks! :D

The Corner Cafe at Penno? It was originally owned by a Korean family, and they were very professional coffee makers- the guy even makes his own blends and everything. Then they sold the whole shop, and the owner didn't know how to make coffee, so she had to hire baristas to make them. One was pretty good, the others though, the coffee was always burnt. Tasted pretty bad, but now the owner's making the coffee herself and kept the good barista, so yay, good coffee all the time! haha

I didn't take very good photos from Cheeky Choco, gotta go there again ><

Ooohhh.. yeah I think I was only there when the Korean family was there.

If you're ever at Pyrmont, opposite of The Little Snail there is a coffee store called Cherry Beans, that's run by Koreans too and they roast too. Very good.

You were just looking for an excuse to visit again, no problems, I welcome it!
